The devil is now seeking his pound of flesh in the city of Nizams, Hyderabad.

This metro is witnessing a trend that developed cities across the world  show at some point; a spike in the sale of anti-depressant drugs. According to pharmacists, the demand for anti-depressants and sleep-inducing drugs  is soaring and the sale of these drugs is growing at "twice the rate of the industry".

"In my dealership alone, I have seen a rise of about 20 per cent in the sale of these drugs," says wholesale drug dealer R P Aggarwal. Drugs like  Escitolopam, Prozac, Sertaline and Tryptomer are moving briskly not only  as OTC drugs , in many cases with prescriptions.

Contrary to supposition,  it is not the stressed-out IT executive  asking for such  pills. In many cases,  homebound women are  report  depression .  Anxiety and depression among the 35 to 40-year-old woman is on an all time high, say doctors. The reason - loneliness.

"I would be getting 10 to 12 such cases everyday, of which eight would be those of women and most of them would in the 35-40 age group and homemakers," gives Dr Minhaj Nasirabadi, consultant psychiatrist with Apollo Hospitals. According to this doctor, the rise in the sale of anti-depressants is largely due to more patients seeking treatment and  more doctors prescribing these medicines.

Psychiatrists opine  that women who were once content with their lives at home with an extended family, are  now waking up to severe  anxiety and panic attacks due to the metro’s stressful lifestyle.
