Dr. Sean Ruland, of the University at Chicago said” Stroke incidence and mortality are generally disproportionately higher among African Americans than among whites. Part of this risk may be explained by a greater vascular risk among African Americans.”During the current study, the researchers tracked 1,809 patients in the African-American Antiplatelet Stroke Prevention Study and recorded the instances of recurrent stroke, recurrent stroke type and disability. The observation revealed that almost 191 recurrent strokes occurred within a span of one year of the previous stroke.
In 39.0 percent of the cases, recurrent strokes occurred due to blockage of a small blood vessel; 16.1 percent were caused by blockage of a large blood vessel; and 36.8 percent were from an unidentified blockage or unknown cause. Additionally nine percent of the recurrent strokes occurred due to bleeding in the brain. It was also seen that in 57% of the patients the recurrent stroke was entirely different from the original stroke.
