Experts say that hypertension, diabetes and obesity generate a condition called metabolic syndrome (MS).

Hypertension, diabetes and obesity are all diseases that could result in cardio-vascular diseases, it is known. Now it has been revealed that together they form even a deadlier combination.

At a conference of the Indian Society of Hypertension (ISH) in Lucknow, capital of the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, experts said that hypertension, diabetes and obesity generate a condition called metabolic syndrome (MS).

It is also known as insulin resistance syndrome and is defined as a cluster of the most dangerous heart attack risk factors.

ISH President Dr Sridhar Diwedi explained that those with the MS were twice as likely to die as those without the syndrome. And their chances of suffering a heart attack or a stroke were also three times higher, he said.

According to some studies, nearly a fourth of the US population could be suffering from the MS. Its frequency increases with the age.

However, the condition is also afflicting an increasing number of children and adolescents. Obesity is an epidemic that is spreading worldwide, cutting across age groups, it is pointed out.

While no single treatment for the metabolic syndrome available, lifestyle modification could be a key strategy to combat it, experts say.
