Pretty teenagers might just end up rousing a negative emotion amongst their peers, envy, and become a target for bullying, a new study has shown. They could also find themselves in the eye of rumors and gossip, that which can be psychologically damaging to a growing teenager.

Spurred by unhealthy competition to catch the attention of boys, many not-so-pretty girls try this nasty way to put the pretty ones down.

Lindsey Leenaars, the author of the study and a student from the University of Alberta along with two professors from Brock University, evaluated data of 2300 Ontario students between 12 and 18 years.

According to Leenaars, the risk of being bullied is 35% more for young attractive girls. She said, "Other girls can use this type of aggression to knock those girls down a bit and eliminate those girls.”

The results saw a dip in the case of handsome teenage boys, who stood a 25% chance of being bullied, as compared to the girls.
