According to new data, there is a drastic improvement in the survival rates of breast cancer in New South Wales since the mid 1990s.
According to a report from the Cancer Institute, after 5 years of diagnosis, 88% of the breast cancer victims are still alive whereas 10 years back the survival rate was 77%.The Assistant Health Minister, Frank Sartor, says, "Greater awareness and screening programs have led to better survival rates. I think breast screening is really the big plus. We estimate about 80 per cent of women in this state in the target group, between 50 and 69 are actually going to breast screening. And breast screening really helps because if you catch breast cancer very early you've got a much greater chance of survival. "
"It actually shows that the breast screening program in the state is working, that women in the state are very aware of breast cancer," he said.
The data also reveals that breast cancer survival rate is 10% higher in women in New South Wales when compared to those in the U.K.
