Mumbai is one city which shows its ugly side during the monsoon.

Monsoon showers have always been welcome, though its associated problems, especially in big cities pose huge difficulties to residents. Mumbai is one city which shows its ugly side during the monsoon.

The taps in Mumbai are ejecting impure water according to reports of the hydraulic department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Apparently, this is evident in the rise of the number of complaints compared to previous year, up by 89.91 per cent.

The corporation had recorded 292 complaints in the month of May. This has shot up to 322 in the first fortnight of June itself.

When water samples were tested, three of them were found to contain traces of Escherichia coli. Hydraulic chief Madhukar Kamble said, “Officials from the health and the hydraulic department are regularly collecting samples to test if the water is potable. The bacteria were found in water from Juhu, Walkeshwar and Colaba. It indicates the presence of pathogenic bacteria.”

The ancient water distribution network compounds the problem of contamination. BMC authorities have confirmed replacement of the old pipes as a way to offset water contamination.
