AIDS is spreading rapidly among the rich and educated class in South Africa

AIDS is spreading rapidly among the rich and educated class in South Africa. This was disclosed by a study conducted by Markinor Polling company along with the University of South Africa.

All along, HIV infection was said to be a disease of the poor but it has spread its tentacles to people belonging to higher strata of society too. The reasons cited are – a total apathy to safe sex, inadequate information from Government agencies, affluent life style and lot of leisure time.

An increase of 19.2 % was observed among people with full time employment while there is not much of a steep rise in the unemployed population from the previous years.

5.5 million people are affected with AIDS from a total population of 11 million. This study revealed that the age group of people below thirty is at a greater risk. On the racial front, AIDS appears to be the greatest leveler affecting both the blacks and the whites.
