A Recent report published by the British Chiropractic Association has once again brought to light the negative effects of obesity. This time report of this condition does not talk about the effects it has on the individual, but on the people treating the individual.
It is believed that about 5,000 nurses in Britain suffer every year from back pain. It is thought that this is partially as a result of having to treat increasingly heavy patients, who often have low fitness levels and hence require assistance to turn themselves over. Despite having specialized equipment like sliding aids and hoists, nurses are forced to often lift and assist patients. Therefore they subject themselves to the risk of severe injury in the long run.It is predicted that the number of nurses working in the NHS with 'work related back-pain' may quit the NHS and seek early retirement. As it is a large number of para-medical staff and doctors seek retirement from the NHS on the grounds of ill health and the current situation with the nurses is not going to help the overall manpower shortage.
Back injury is only one of the many problems that face the nurses put up in the NHS, others include -increase in workload due to low staffing, the growing age of the nurses in the workforce and violence against them.
