Investigating the link between plant protein intake and chronic kidney disease, a new study reveals the positive impact of plant-based diets on heart health and cancer risk.

Indefinite Link Between Plant-Based Diets and Kidney Health Explored!
Plant-based diets offer health benefits like reducing heart disease and cancer risk, but it's not clear how plant protein intake affects chronic kidney disease risk. However, a study led by Ga Young Heo aims to investigate this link (1 Trusted Source

Using the UK biobank study data, the researchers found that participants with a higher plant protein intake had a lower risk of developing CKD.

The Power of Plant-Based Diets

In this prospective cohort study, 117,809 participants with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ≥60 ml/min/1.73 m2, a urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) <30 mg/g, and no previous history of CKD completed multiple dietary questionnaires.

This finding suggests that a higher dietary intake of plant-based protein may benefit kidney health and provide insight into dietary interventions to prevent CKD in primary care settings.

Additionally, the study's limitations arise from potential incomplete dietary assessments and limited generalizability, attributed to the UK Biobank study's participant characteristics. Consequently, more interventional studies are needed to establish the kidney protective advantages of plant protein intake.
