India Can Become Major HIV Drugs Producer

The World Health Organization has revealed that India can easily become a market leader in the manufacture and supply of medicines for HIV across the world.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed that India can easily become a market leader in the manufacture and supply of medicines for HIV across the world. Several people in the African Continent are dying as they do not have access to HIV drugs. India is in a position to provide low priced diagnostic tests for children, and also contribute the trained health personnel badly needed in Africa, according to the source. The laws in India also do not prevent pharmaceutical firms from developing cheaper mass-scale fixed dose ARV treatment.

The Delhi Society for Promotion of Rational Use of Drugs (DSPRUD) president R. Parameswar said the quality of doctors and skilled human resources, both in medicine and pharmaceutical sectors, lend India the potential to produce both original branded drugs and generic drugs for any company in the world. India can also contribute towards developing the second-line ARV drugs, as 10% to 15% of the HIV patients are developing a resistance to the first-line treatment drugs. India has a HIV population of over 5 million people.
