A 46-year old Indian American has been sentenced to almost seven years in prison and has also been ordered to pay $9.7 million for his role in a healthcare scam carried out from January 2003 to March 2007.

Michigan’s Suresh Chand, who also owns Continental Rehab Services Inc, claimed more than $18 million in fictitious physical and occupational therapy services of which they were paid more than $8.5 million by the Medicare program.

Chand pled guilty to "one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and one count of conspiracy to launder money" in Medicare Fraud Scheme last September. He admitted that he had created fictitious therapy files in the names of Medicare beneficiaries in order to claim benefits.

Chand added that he paid hundreds of Medicare beneficiaries to get their signatures and in some cases gave out prescriptions for controlled substances. He also recruited licensed physical and occupational therapists and paid them for each file they falsified.
