Dr. Balakrishna Ganapat Rao Matapurkar, from Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi has created history of sorts by winning the first patent on organ regeneration from the American patent office for his technique in successfully regenerating / repairing organs in human beings.

A few weeks ago the American patent office granted him a patent on this technique. Dr. Matapurkar was able to regenerate organs like the uterus, urethra and ureter in animals and experiments are on to regenerate organs like kidneys and parts of the intestine. Certain large tendons in humans have also been regenerated. Only limited successful human trials have been conducted, but the surgeon says the technique has been perfected in monkeys.

Dr. Matapurkar discloses that he uses certain special cells called steam cells which are present in the body and have the capacity to transform into full organs. He adds that since one's own body is the factory, there is no question of biological rejection as these new organs are produced by one's own body itself.

Though Dr. Matapurkar has won the patent after four years of patient waiting, there is a long way to go before this magical technique becomes widely used.
