Industrial Generation of Blood from Stem Cells
Scientists from four Scottish universities are working to manufacture blood for transfusions. Industrial generation of blood from stem cells would put an end to problems for maintaining blood supply for transfusion and would also ensure compatibility between donor and recipient.
Scientists have made it clear that this is not artificial blood. But is similar to the red blood cells (RBC's) found in the body, but are made in the laboratory. One of the major challenges of this project is that very large number of cells that will be required and so scientists need to develop new bio-process and engineering solutions alongside the biology.

The Scottish Funding Council has donated 2.5 million pounds for this project.
