Ria suffered from a breathing problem soon after she was born and doctors diagnosed her with Tracheo-Esophageal Fistula (TEF) which affects one in 8000 infants and conducted a complex surgery. However when her breathing problem did not subside, she was shifted to the Al Wasal Hospital where the doctors diagnosed her with another rare condition known as Laryngo-Tracheo-Oesophageal Cleft Type 2 (LTEC-2), though she was kept on ventilator even after the surgery.

She was then shifted to a hospital in Mumbai where she went a number of complex surgeries including Tracheostomy, surgery for closure of Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) and a heart surgery.

Though she still has to be kept on ventilator for at least three hours a day, Ria finally made her way home one year and two months after she was born. “After the PDA closure surgery was performed, Ria's condition improved significantly, and she even gained some weight. She could even be taken off the ventilator for longer durations”, the cardiac surgeon at Lilavati Hospital, Dr Suresh Joshi said.
