Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) and interns, along with the city hospitals in Maharashtra have embarked on a four day strike to press against the reduction of postgraduate medical seats in medical colleges. All routine services in hospitals across Maharashtra, except for emergency services, will cease work till concrete action is taken by the ministry.
As a support for the cause, the medical teachers dished out a letter to the municipal commissioner and the mayor requesting immediate action on the issue.What were 1900 seats for post graduate medical courses in 2001 in the state is presently reduced to 411 by Medical Council of India (MCI). “We are on an indefinite strike till the government restores the original number of seats,” said Ravikant Singh, Joint Secretary, MARD. “There are more than 5,000 contenders from Maharashtra itself vying for the post graduate seats,” he said.
Reiterating the demand, Gunjan Sharma from Maharashtra Medical Students Association said, “We want the number of seats to be brought back to 651. Now that residents and teachers have joined our cause, the government will have to take notice of our demands.”
Minister for higher and technical education Dilip Walse Patil has promised to present the case to the Union health minister Anbumani Ramadoss with hope of a positive solution to the problem.
