The US Food and Drug Administration has given its approval for the accessory instrument developed by Intuitive Surgical to assist the da Vinci surgical robot in performing gall bladder surgery, the company said.

Intuitive Surgical said that its Single-Site Instrumentation kit allows the robot to perform the surgery with a single incision and expressed hope that it will make the use of the robot in the general surgery space more attractive.

The kit comes with three different instruments, which will be used for cholecystectomy, or the removal of the gallbladder.
