The death of an elderly Nanaimo, B.C. man, George Cook father Cheryle Cook on a normal day resulted in an investigation has be launched against the hospital. His death was mainly because the delay in administering proper treatment. It took seven hours before he was seen by a doctor who pronounced him dead.
He died as he waited for emergency care. Cheryle Cook said that the 88-year-old Cook was taken from his senior's home to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital suffering from pneumonia. When she arrived at the hospital she found him lying on a cot in a hallway near a door. Then she brought him blankets and shielded his face from the draft. Neither the doctors nor the nurse did anything. She said that her father was a proud man and a hard worker, and was left to die without dignity. CTV Vancouver's Renu Bakshi said that the hospital showed tragic disrespect to an elderly man at the end of his life.The Vancouver Island Health Authority said it sympathized with the family and hoped to have the investigation complete by the end of the week. It is now known that two months ago, the hospital received a million-dollar to improve emergency room (ER) staffing. Dr. Sheldon Glazer of Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster told CTV Vancouver that the problem in his hospital is a lack of beds.
A few weeks ago, the majority of ER doctors at Vancouver General Hospital issued a letter to patients saying that overcrowding was leading to poor and undignified care. ER doctor says that due to the lack of proper beds they cannot treat the patients. Taylor responded that the complex problem requires complex solutions.
