Ireland’s First Double Lung Transplant

Doctors at the Mater Hospital, Ireland have successfully carried out a double lung transplant for a patient in his mid 50s.

Doctors at the Mater Hospital, Ireland have successfully carried out a double lung transplant for a patient in his mid 50s.

The patient who is from west of Ireland is now in the intensive care unit under the strict observation. The doctors fear that the next 24 hours is very critical as the patient might develop complications.

The doctors are very happy and satisfied with the man’s progress. But what they fear is the risk of rejection and also development of various infections due to lowered immunity levels.

They are giving the patient all the anti-rejection drugs which might reduce the rejection process.

In the recent years there has been a lot of development in the field of transplantation.

Due to this there has been a fall in the number of transplant rejections. In the previous year the hospital performed the first single lung transplantation which was also a great success. This was done on a woman hailing from Limerick.

In the past people had to go to the freeman hospital in Newcastle for transplantations but now they need not go as far as Newcastle but can get the same treatment here at Mater Hospital.
