Nicotine lozenge releases a dose of nicotine and is one of the important products among those that are used to quit smoking.
The federal government has announced that it no longer requires a prescription in Canada. The lozenges are to join nicotine patches, gums and inhalers and become available over the counter. This decision was taken because the government said that the prescription would unnecessarily restrict the availability of a safe and effective smoking cessation product. People who want to quit smoking should be able to buy these nicotine replacement products that are readily available in all stores. The nicotine lozenge is really a safe option for people who smoke and use tobacco. But Peter Selby, clinical director of addiction programs at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto said that this tool which is considered to be safe can help many to initiate the habit. The existing controversy is that if these nicotine-replacement products are marketed by the wrong people then it would result in the encouragement of nicotine addiction. Cynthia Callard, executive director of Physicians for a Smoke-Free Canada said that some manufacturers of nicotine replacement products promote their products as effective tools to help people manage cravings in areas where they can't smoke, such as airplanes and restaurants. This would end up in people getting addicted to nicotine replacement products in addition to continuing their smoking habits.
