We know how complicated kidney transplants can be; so it comes as a surprise when we hear of a man who has undergone 3 such surgeries!

Jaswant Singh, a 33-year old resident of Punjab, has in all received three kidneys from his close relatives. His body now houses five kidneys.

Kidney transplantation is the transfer of a healthy kidney from one individual (donor) to another (recipient) through a specialized surgery.

Singh began to face renal trouble around 12 years back. He underwent his first kidney transplant in 2004 – the organ was donated by his sister. Due to financial troubles, Singh was unable to continue his post-transplant medication after the first year. This led to the rejection of the new kidney by Jaswant’s body. In 2006, he received a second kidney – this time donated by his other sister.

This too was rejected after 14 months and the patient was back on dialysis. A desperate Jaswant Singh opted for a third transplant – the organ was that of his 55-year old mother, Amar Kaur.

Doctors treating him at the National Kidney Hospital pooled their own resources to conduct the third transplant free of cost. His surgeons, Rajesh Agrawal, Suresh Aggarawal and Sanjay Mittal, also provided for a substantial amount of the medication.
