An NRI couple from Canada have booked a complaint against an IVF center at Jalandhar .Accordingly, the center took 5 lakh rupees from them in return for the assurance of a boy child being born.
Amrik Singh and his wife Rupinder Kaur sent a complaint to the civil surgeon of Jalandhar , Dr JP Singh. They alleged that due to an infertility problem they had approached Vardhan Medical Centre in the year 2005 , to try for a child through in-vitro fertilization (IVF). The center they say , demanded 5 lakh rupees in return for a male child. The medical centre is now under fire for practicing selection techniques , after these were banned here years ago . This is due to the low ratio of female to male births. This incident would have remained undisclosed, but for the fact that the woman gave birth to a baby girl instead.
When Kaur conceived, the centre allegedly, conducted an ultrasonography (USG) test, and confirmed that it was a male fetus.
The couple returned to Canada soon after, and discovered through USG tests conducted there that Kaur was carrying a female baby, as opposed to what they were told at the center. Kaur delivered the baby in 2006. The couple further alleges that on coming to India recently, they went to the owner of the centre with their complaint and demanded their money back. Yet, he did not entertain their request.
Meanwhile, Dr JP Singh, on receiving their complaint dispatched three doctors of the health department to the IVF centre on Tuesday. They were able to seize records of the said case.
While confirming the development, Dr Singh gave that a show cause notice was being issued to the centre under the PNDT Act. Still, he says:"The couple's act is equally illegal."
