Mistakes made by fertility clinics have nearly doubled in the last year, a troubling set of figures released by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) reveals.
According to the statistics, such incidents rose from 182 to 334 in period between 2007/08 and 2008/09. The mistakes range from clinics accidently switching off fridges that contain embryos, wrong embryos being implanted in women or using a different man’s sperm to fertilize eggs. The figures have caused an uproar among various embryologists and the HFEA which has called on the government to impose strict laws in order to make the clinics accountable for their mistakes.
The HFEA has also come under some heat with the organization being accused of not making sure that their suggestions are being implemented. “I think the key failure of the HFEA is that when they ask clinics to put in special procedures, they’re not enforcing them. It’s important that when you’ve identified a weakness in a procedure, you quickly enforce it, and don’t wait a year to do so”, one of London’s leading embryologist, Sammy Lee said.
