The Institute of Food Science at Cornell University researches on the health benefits of fruit juices and confirmed that juices lighter in color offer more health benefits than dark juices such as red grape or prune juice.

Consumption of adequate iron is essential for infants and young children as it is a vital factor for physical and intellectual growth. To ensure proper intake of iron consumption of cereals, formulas, and juices are necessary as they are typically fortified with iron.

Researchers from Cornell are set out to determine if different juices offer varying amounts of iron intake.

Fruit juices usually contain Fe uptake inhibitors and also ascorbic acid. Cereal fortified with iron were mixed to Juices from a supermarket .Iron intake was boosted with pear, apple, grapefruit, orange, and white grape juices. However, iron absorption was inhibited with the red grape juice and prune juice.

Researches conclude that people lacking iron should avoid or control the consumption of red grape juice or prune juice .On the contrary those who are trying to restrict their intake of iron (hemochromatitics and astronauts) can use these juices to help better.

To sum up a proper balance of the various juices is suggested by study authors to remind consumers that the compounds that may be controlling iron absorption are the ones with anticancer benefits.
