Kellogg’s to Fortify Popular Kids’ Cereal Products With Vitamin D

Popular breakfast cereal producer Kellogg’s has announced that it will be adding vitamin D in all of its kids’ cereal products, such as Coco Pops and Rice Krispies, in order to combat the rising rates of rickets. The company announced its decision following a recent survey carried out among pediatrician dietitians in Britain.

More than 82 percent of the dietitians revealed that the number of rickets cases has been increasing in the last five years while nearly half of them said that they had treated the condition in the past year. The number of children less than 10 years of age admitted to hospitals due to the condition has shot up by 140 percent between 2001 and 2008.

Kellogg’s said that it will be adding vitamin D to all of the cereals which are targeted at children by the end of 2012. The company added that while Corn Flakes and Ricicles already contained vitamin D, it will be adding the vitamin to Rice Krispies by March and Frosties by September next year.
