Kenya on Wednesday issued a polio alert after a rare case was confirmed in a young girl in a northern region near the border with Sudan, a health official said.
Public health director Shahnaaz Shariff announced plans for an emergency vaccination following the diagnosis of wild polio virus, the country's first case in two years.Kenya reported a first case of polio in more than two decades in 2006. It had eradicated the virus in 1984.
"Mothers in Kenya should be worried because one case of polio is considered as an outbreak," Shariff said.
Health officials confirmed the virus in a four-year-old girl in the Turkana region and said it was suspected to have originated in south Sudan. A second case is under investigation in a South African laboratory.
Polio remains endemic in just four countries in the world, the hotbed being Nigeria, followed by India, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
