A recent study that looked at the fiber intake among kids shows , most small children between ages 2 and 5 aren’t getting enough fiber in their diets thereby putting them at higher risk for health problems like constipation and heart disease .

Researchers analyzed data of a survey, conducted between 1994 and 1996 and in 1998, on dietary intake over a two-day period for children between the ages of 2 and 5. Results showed most kids got what fiber they did consume from low-fiber fruits and legumes. However, most children in the study did not meet the recommendations. Kids who ate the most fiber followed diets richer in nutrients and ate more servings of foods recommended on the Food Guide Pyramid.

At present different recommendations on fiber intake exist, hence researchers call for more study to determine a recommended level of fiber intake in children.
