Cancer is the most feared health issue among Kiwis.
New Zealanders are more worried about cancer than any other disease or disability, revealed a survey by Southern Cross Health Society. After surveying 1500 adults with health insurance it was found that cancer topped the fear list followed by brain injury, stroke, heart attack and loss of eye sight. The survey showed that many people were undertaking steps needed to help reduce their risk of cancer and other health issues.
Peter Tynan, chief executive of Southern Cross Health Society said, "It was possible the fear of cancer stemmed from its unknown nature. But while science doesn't yet fully understand its causes, what is known is that preventative steps and a healthy lifestyle can help to reduce our risk. With many cancers, early detection is crucial to survival, so keeping up screening is vital."
