Hospital patients are dying post surgery due to inadequate post-operative care, according to a recent report. The study found that 75% of those who did not survive emergency operations were sent to general wards post surgery instead of admission into critical care.
‘Failure to allocate resources to patients at risk of death is a serious concern for patients undergoing surgery in Europe. In the long term, if there are fewer complications with surgery, that will be a saving for the hospital and it will, of course, be much better for the patient,’ said Dr Rupert Pearse from Queen Mary, University of London.
