When you're going on vacation the last thing you want to think about is a medical emergency.
One in four vacations includes a trip to medical emergencies and many patients are simply unprepared to manage the situation in a new environment, shows a new survey. "When you’re going on vacation the last thing you want to think about is a medical emergency, but with just a few simple steps, you can rest assured that you will be prepared for any situation," said Steven Corbett, managing director at Dr.P.Phillips Hospital, Orlando, Florida.
‘Even though people only get few days off throughout the year and spend a lot of time planning the vacations, if one is feeling sick or is injured before the vacation begins, they should stay home.’
In the study, the doctors suggested some ways to make sure people are prepared to manage a trip to the emergency room during their vacations. Even though people only get few days off throughout the year and spend a lot of time planning the vacations, if one is feeling sick or is injured before the vacation begins, they should stay home, the doctors said. "People who think they can manage their conditions end up in the emergency room, ruining the trip for everyone involved," Corbett said. If individuals have some medical issue or a chronic condition, they should carry pertinent information with them.
Further, one should fill their stock of medications, before they start travelling as getting a refill in an unfamiliar place can be a challenge, the doctors observed. In addition, many patients end up in the emergency department because they did not speak up when they first started feeling ill, as they do not want to ruin everyone else’s fun, so they just keep quiet.
"That can be very dangerous, especially if someone is having symptoms like chest pains or dizziness that can be sign of something serious. So, if something doesn’t seem right, speak up immediately," Corbett maintained.
Investing in travel insurance and participating in every activity in moderation can also help travellers.
