A new study has shown that vision correction patients will be benefited equally with Lasik surgery as well as Lasek surgery. Both types of surgeries are equally safe and beneficial.
Both surgeries employ lasers to cut flaps in the cornea and rectify the shape. Lasek (laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy) involves cutting only the external surface of the cornea. This helps in doing away with some of the potential flap problems that could arise from a deeper incision created during Lasik (laser in situ keratomileusis) surgery. Lasek recovery is always longer than Lasik, and the patient may experience more pain post surgery. To ascertain the benefits of both lasik and lasek surgery and which one scores better, University of Illinois researcher Dimitri Azar, and colleagues compared 122 eyes that underwent Lasik with 122 eyes that underwent Lasek.
The finding revealed that eyes treated with Lasek were enabled with somewhat better vision, although the difference was very slight for patients to discern.” Both procedures seem safe, effective, and predictable. We found that although there were some differences that favor the Lasek procedure, the differences were not clinically significant." Azar said.
The findings are published in the current issue of American Journal of Ophthalmology.
