In a cheerful gay pride parade that called on authorities to enact legislation to outlaw homophobia, hundreds of thousands of Brazilian homosexuals marched along the famous Copacabana beach promenade on Sunday.

Gay, lesbian, transgender and cross-dressing marchers joined dozens of trucks blaring electronic music for the colorful parade, which organizers had hoped would draw some 1.5 million people, though police officials told O Globo newspaper less half as many actually took part.
