Learning Disabilities If Undetected Early Proves Costly Later

Learning disabilities diagnosed late leads to long lasting harmful psychological effect on people.

A study conducted by the Learning Disabilities Association of Canada states that learning disabilities diagnosed late leads to long lasting harmful psychological effect on people. Depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and unemployment are some of the problems faced by people with such disabilities.

Philippa Slater, B.C. representative of the learning disabilities association confirms this finding and says that many such people resort to the extreme measure of committing suicide as they are not able to handle their situation. But he also states that with an early intervention and help, this situation can be averted.

Slater also feels discouraged by the insufficient funds from the government to help such kids. According to him, many parents of learning disabled children are not able to afford learning aids or services intended for such children.

The study also suggests training courses for teachers on detecting and teaching children with learning disabilities. This study, called Putting A Face On Learning Disabilities, made use of Statistics Canada survey data to establish how learning disabilities affected people's lives.
