These are in fact regular pills prescribed as anti-worming medication, by vets. Yet these are now increasingly offered to partygoers as legal ways, to get high.The rocketing use of these drugs have forced UK’s medicine regulator, the Medicines Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHPRA), to put the brakes on their sales.
The drugs containing BZP or Benzylpiperazine have the active ingredient piperazine, a pepper extract that supposedly gives the ‘high’.
Yet warns the MHPRA, piperazine can cause problems including agitation, vomiting, seizures and allergic reactions. The effects are similar to amphetamine and in extreme cases, may result in death, according to the agency.
The drugs are sold under trade names such as Pep Twisted, Pep Stoned, Legal E, Nemesis, The Good Stuff and Euphoria. They can be purchased from ‘headshops’ and over the Internet.
The spokesman for MHPRA, Danny Lee Frost says that producers and sellers must now stop marketing all products containing benzylpiperazine and piperazine blend in the UK with immediate effect, and must cancel all advertising and promotion including Internet promotion and sale.
