A survey was conducted among about 200 people with multiple sclerosis ( MS ). Questions posed by the researchers covered areas such as pain, tiredness, emotional well-being, vitality, social functioning, and the ability to perform essential activities of daily living. Results from the MS patients were then compared to results taken from a sample of people in the general population.
Multiple sclerosis patients in the quality of life survey did report more problems in the areas of physical functioning, vitality, and overall health, they were no more likely than people in the general population to complain of emotional or mental health problems. They also had similar scores with regards to pain and social functioning.Researchers say they believe these results suggest the need for more study to identify other factors that might be playing a role in quality of life for MS patients, such as religion, home and social environments, and support networks.
