Tamil Nadu Health Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran commissioned a specialty outpatient clinic for patients with liver-related disorders at the Government General Hospital on Wednesday.

This Clinic, besides providing advanced therapeutic options to diseases like jaundice, kidney failure and loss of immunity, will also focus on preventive measures - said S. Barnaba Durairaj, head of Medical Gastroenterology. There will be provision for conducting research in hepatology too – he added.

40 per cent of patients who approached the gastroenterology department had liver-related disorders. The increase in the liver-related disorders is mostly due to the changes in lifestyle and increased alcohol consumption - Dr. Barnaba said.

GH Kalavathy Ponniraivan, V.K. Rajamani, medical superintendent (in-charge) of the Institute of Internal Medicine and Dean of Madras Medical College were among the speakers in the press meeting that was held on that day.
