A London pub has come up with a new idea to aid recession-hit customers - accepting goods and services for beers.

Cash-strapped clients at The Marksman pub in Shoreditch, East London, can trade from CDs to papers and also offer services such as tuning the pub's piano to settle their bill for starters and drinks.

Landlady Dawn Kolper revealed that she had put in an advertisement hoping to fill the pub's jukebox with old tunes that were no longer wanted.

"The ad turned out to be so successful that we extended the offer and created a list of wanted items called The Landlady's Fancy," Sky News quoted her as saying.

And now, an exclusive auction-style bartering night called 'Barter for a Beer' was being planned for a list of desired things including serving trays, and even fake moustaches.

Kolper added: "We're trying anything we can to help people through these difficult financial times."
