A new technique to lose weight permanently without surgery involves ultrasound to zap fat cells, report scientists in England. Liposuction, a surgical way to suck out fat has been the most popular method to lose weight. But now, according to Mark Whiteley, a senior vascular surgeon from Guildford, southeast England who addressed a meeting of the Royal Society of Medicine, the newly-discovered technique would be effective for destroying small areas of stubborn fat. High-intensity focused ultrasound [HIFU] in conjunction with cyolipolysis , a technique that freezes fat could be successfully used to destroy fat in the body. According to Whiteley, other treatment methods using different types of ultrasound do not work because they only damage the fat cells which grow back again.
Stephen O'Rahilly, professor of clinical biochemistry at Cambridge University has warned, however, that this new method carries with it the risk of fat getting stored in major organs like the heart or the liver which could turn out to be potentially dangerous.
