It is not high levels of cholesterol but low levels that are making news. Recent reports are indicating that Low levels of Cholesterol maybe linked to depression and violent behavior. A new study shows that men with relatively low cholesterol levels were up to seven times more likely to report symptoms of severe depression.

Edward Suarez, PhD from Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. Said, "I think that at some point, measurement of cholesterol and the cholesterol profile may be used as a screening tool for depression," Vivian Mitropoulou, PhD, who is studying the link between cholesterol levels and personality disorders at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York told that after researchers began testing the first drugs designed to lower elevated cholesterol levels, she found that a lot of people taking the drugs were dying of causes unrelated to cardiovascular system. Another researcher added that, "A lot of them seemed to be smashing their cars into bridges and doing all sorts of impulsive and violent things." It is possible that cholesterol may be causing a fall in serotonin levels in the brain leading to depression or aggressive behavior. More research is required before firm conclusions can be derived from this news.
