The results of a study show that a low fat diet can decrease the recurrence of breast cancer in women.
Results from a study carried out by non-profit National Institute of Cancer Research delving into the influence of healthy dietary habits in the prevention and treatment of cancer has come out with significant findings.
The results published in the journal of the institute show that a low fat diet can decrease the recurrence of breast cancer in women, especially in that of estrogen receptor(ER)- negative breast cancer. The study was carried out on 2400 postmenopausal women with breast cancer and spanned five years.
One part of the group was asked to take less than 33 g fat per day while the other was prescribed the standard diet comprising 51g fat per day in addition to conventional cancer therapies.
Five years on, a survey indicated the recurrence of breast cancer as 9.8 percent as against 12.4 percent of the control group.
This, the researchers say are significantly different.
In the case of ED- negative breast cancers, the results were drastically different; recurrence of breast cancer was cut by almost half.
