A 20-year old Irish woman became the first patient to receive a lung transplant after suffering from multi-resistant Aspergillus and multiple fungal balls in her own lungs. Dublin resident Becky Jones spent more than a year on waiting list but was finally airlifted to Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester in May where she underwent the transplant.
Professor David Denning, who is the director of the National Aspergillosis Centre, said that Jones needed to undergo the transplant or else her condition would have proven fatal in less than two years.
Commenting on the surgery, Jones said that it has changed her life completely. “I'm a different person, I can breathe, I can do anything I want. I can travel again, I can go shopping again, I can go to college or just go to lunch at the drop of a hat with my friends, which previously I would have to plan weeks in advance”, she said.
