The attempt by 12,76,425 students in Madhya Pradesh was organized to create awareness of hand washing with soap as a key approach to disease prevention.

The Guinness Book of World Records recognized the world record attempt by 12,76,425 students in Madhya Pradesh, India for washing their hands together on the 2014 Global Hand washing Day.
The attempt, by students at 13,196 venues in Madhya Pradesh's 51 districts under the supervision of the state's Panchayat and Rural development department on October 16, 2014, has been recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The record was earlier being held collectively by three nations - Argentina, Peru and Mexico - in 2011 when 7,40,870 people participated in the attempt.

Aruna Sharma, chief secretary, Panchayat and Rural Development, on July 3, said the program to wash hands on such a large scale was organized to create public awareness and duly video recorded at all the venues.
