This announcement was made on Friday after a discussion between an MMC team and Director General N. K. Ganguly and other officials of the Indian Council for Medical Research. This was followed by the inauguration of the golden jubilee celebrations of the cardio thoracic surgery department of the college. The schemes would be brought into action in another 6 months, according to Dr. Ganguly.Kings Institute, Guindy, is to have a centre of excellence in virology due to the efforts of Union Minister of Health Anbumani Ramadoss and State Health Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran.
According to Dr. Anbumani, the cardio thoracic department at the MMC would get a new building in its anniversary year. This department is one of the 5 such departments in the world, to be celebrating 50 years of service.
Prevention would be the focus of the national programme on cardiovascular disease, diabetes and stroke, to be launched this year. The message would be spread to schools, colleges and rural areas of the country.
Dr. Anbumani told about the importance of developing workplace health interventions taking into account the high rate of cardiac arrest and stroke among young IT professionals.
A new medical syllabus was being drafted which would include more practical work and issues that were socially relevant and important to rural areas, he said. The new curriculum would make an undergraduate MBBS student to interact with patients from the very first day at the college.

A commemorative stamp would be brought out by the department of Information Technology and Communication to celebrate the golden jubilee anniversary of the CTS department, promised Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister for Information Technology and Communication.
