The Association of Managements of Private Medical and Dental Colleges (AMUPMDC) has rejected the fees fixed by the Shikshan Shulka Samiti and has decided that all 29 medical colleges under it would fix their own fees.
On June 21, the Shikshan Shulka Samiti has announced a 7.5 percent hike in fees from last year on an ad hoc basis. That meant that medical fees were Rs 2.5 lakh and dental fees was Rs 1.5 lakh. This was unacceptable to the colleges, which normally charge anything between Rs 4 lakh to Rs 4.80 lakh per year for a medical seat and Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh for a dental seat.AMUPMDC president Kamal Kishore Kadam maintained that this fees decided by the Samiti was not implementable. "If the Samiti has a problem with the fees we charge, they need to prove that we are indulging in profiteering. We have already communicated our decision to the Samiti. It is only meant to give an alternate fee structure if colleges indulge in profiteering," Kadam said.
According to the new fee structure proposed by the colleges, Mumbai ones will charge the highest amount. "The recurring expenses in Mumbai are higher than that in other parts of the state," members explained.
