A study by researchers of Providence Hospital Heart Institute and Medical Center in Michigan has found that implantable defibrillators may not be able to save the lives of women with advanced heart failure.
The study analyzed 934 women with advanced heart failure, who were part of published clinical trials data on implantable defibrillators from 1950 to 2008. They found that none of the studies showed any benefits for women using defibrillators. However in 3,810 men in the studies, death risk was significantly less if they used the device.
Lead researcher Dr. Christian Machado said, "Our trials are biased towards males. Seventy to 80 percent are made up of male subjects. We need to do a better job in trials recruiting at least the same amount of women as we do men. We have failed to do that."
The details of the study appear in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
