A new survey has found that 63% of people are ignorant as to how many calories must be consumed on a daily basis.
The results of this US survey may throw a light on the rising number of overweight and obese people across the world. Just about 12% had a roughly accurate idea on the calorie needs.

Jayne Brocklehurst, a dietitian for weight loss surgery clinic Gravitas, told the Daily Mail newspaper that for losing weight people needed to eat at least 500 calories less per day. For an average woman to maintain her existing weight she needs about 2,000 calories, while eating 1,500 calories can help lose weight.

It is crucial to look at overall lifestyle changes, eating fruit and veg, and having a balanced diet, she recommended.
