Make Medicines Affordable: Jamir Urges Pharma Companies

Mr S C Jamir, the Governor of Goa, has suggested that the pharmaceutical companies should produce medicines which are affordable

Mr S C Jamir, the Governor of Goa, has suggested that the phar produce medicines which are affordable to the comm maceutical companies should on man. He made this suggestion after inaugurating the new development facility of a pharmaceutical company, Pliva, at Corlim, Goa,two days ago.

He also added that modern medicines and treatment are affordable only by the affluent and it was, therefore, essential that in the field of health care a mechanism exists whereby the rich and the poor alike enjoy its benefits .

'The greatest service to the humanity by pharmaceutical industry would be to produce medicines which are affordable by common man,' said the Governor also adding that the goal for profit should not exceed the wants of the suffering humanity.

He said that in spite of tremendous advancement in the field of medicine and surgery, some diseases still plague humankind which pose a challenge to the pharmaceutical industry. However, advancement in the field of bio-technology and molecular biology has paved the way for researchers to develop drugs with specific properties, adding that research would find effective remedy for diseases like cancer and HIV/AIDS.Mr Jamir praised the Indian system of medicine like Ayurveda, which was gaining global recognition for its affordability and lack of side effects, adding that India was a favoured destination for high quality health services and it was therefore necessary to raise the standards of health care system in the country.,

Croatian Ambassador to India, Mr Dino Debelijuh, who was present on the occasion, thanked the Goan government for the support extended to the project.

Ms Zdravka Kneazevic, Pliva’s executive director for generics research and development, Dr Mohammad Zahirul Khan, chairman of Pliva Research,India, and Dr Hemant Kumar Jajoo, acting managing director of Pliva Research, India, were present on the occasion.
