Malaria become a "near-epidemic" in the Dooars region of North Bengal claiming 88 lives and afflicting more than 20,000 persons in the past two and a half months, an RSP legislator in West Bengal said today.
Nirmal Das, an MLA from Alipurduar constituency, told reporters here that 48 deaths had been reported from Alipurduar sub-division alone.He urged Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee to personally look into the matter which, he alleged, "tends to go out of control of the Jalpaiguri district administration".
It was mostly tea gardens and forest areas in the Dooars, that were affected by a virulent form of malaria and the affected got "very little" medical attention, he alleged.
Claiming that the incidence of malarial attacks was much higher than last year, he said there was a dearth of medical and para-medical staff, as well as medicines.
The RSP leader urged state Health Minister Suryakanta Mishra to visit the malaria-hit areas with a medical team.
