Malaria has claimed the lives of 271 people this year in Assam, state Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said here.
Replying to the debate on cut motions in the state assembly, Sarma said the exact toll could be higher as information from interior areas had not reached the state capital.Admitting that last year the anti-malaria drive was "slow", he said this year 90 per cent of the affected area has been covered.
In the two most affected districts of Sibsagar and Dibrugarh, a drive had been launched to eliminate malaria and encephalitis, Sarma said.
The minister informed that a project of Rs 120 crore had been passed by his department to introduce super speciality courses in the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital and the matter was now with the Planning Commission.
In the next two to three years the health scenario would change for the better, he claimed.
