A new report has found that over 30% of drug addicts in Scotland do not receive treatment for their addiction.
This report was a different one from the national reporting of drug-related deaths published in August by the General Register Office for Scotland (GROS). The latter had reported 545 drug-related deaths in 2009.

The new report by the National Drug Related Death Database (NDRDD) analyzed 432 deaths and found that 172 of these patients were never treated for their addiction.

"This report makes very difficult and distressing reading. Earlier intervention through treatment may have been able to steer these people away from addiction and into recovery," said Fergus Ewing, minister for community safety. The latter was speaking at an Alcohol and Drugs Partnership in Fife on Tuesday.

Mr Ewing said that £28.6 million would be provided to health boards to tackle this issue head on.
