Medical Simulator Centre to be Launched by Manipal University

A Medical Simulator Centre (MSC) will be launched by the Manipal University of help medical students understand the nuances of their discipline in a better manner.

The simulator will have "Sim Family", which consists of man, woman and child mannequins to assist the students. "The Sim Family allows the medical students to do diagnostic exercises including resuscitation, de-fibrillation, checking heartbeat and pulse, administering different injections including intra-venous fluids and monitoring heart and lungs through a real-time monitor," said Dr Raj P Warrier, vice-chancellor, Manipal University.

Set up at a cost of Rs1 Crore, the MSC has been fitted with equipment from Norway. The audio and video facilities help students conduct their case studies in a classroom environment.

"The Sim Family has so many other features to help the students in Gynecology and Obstetrics. The Sim lady actually gives birth in front of the students. They can take out the baby and start the post natal ambulatory operations. The lady even responds with groans and grunts to the verbal stimulus given by the students. The newborn child gives its first cry when the students give it the right treatment after the child birth," said Dr Ramkumar Venkateswaran, Director of Anesthesiology.

The Sim Family will also be able to produce medical emergencies, which will help students respond in a better manner to the same.
